Every few months the light on your car’s dashboard comes on to remind you it is time for a tuneup. You may ignore it for a little while, but eventually you swing by the shop to have it checked out. Why? Because you know taking time for small routine maintenance on your engine will prevent bigger problems when you least expect them.
Why you need an annual service check for your air conditioner.
Preventative maintenance will protect your air conditioner, keeping it running longer, just the way it protects your car. This hard working machine generates a lot of heat as it runs and it has lots of moving parts. Any of which can fail if not properly maintained.
Every major equipment manufacturer along with utility company representatives and HVAC industry professionals all recommend regularly scheduled tuneups and maintenance on air conditioning systems. These checkups have been shown to reduce equipment breakdowns and lower utility bills because the units run more efficiently.
After sitting idle all winter, your system may have few kinks; a tuneup is the best way to eliminate any negative impact caused by the severe winter weather. Finding and fixing issues before the summer kicks in means you avoid the discomfort and inconvenience of a summer breakdown.
Check the fluid
Like your engine, it requires fluids and lubricants. A properly maintained system is a closed loop, so you shouldn’t need to add refrigerant. When it is low, that’s a sign something is wrong. Without enough refrigerant you compressor might seize up, and the cost of replacing a compressor maybe several thousand dollars. This is an expense that can be easily avoided with a quick check twice a year.
Unfortunately, there is no simple “dip stick” to check your fluid levels so our expert technicians will monitor the system operating pressure to look for signs of a refrigerant leak. They’ll also look for other signs that your compressor is aging such as monitoring it for proper amperage, volt draw and the integrity of the wiring connections.
Remember your air conditioner, sitting outside your home is exposed to the elements all year long. In addition to collecting dust and dirt it is subject to significant wear and tear. The tuneup includes cleaning the coils along with checking the wires and refrigerant lines.
Clean up the indoor coil too
There are two parts to your air conditioner system and we make sure both parts are running right. We’ll check all the electric systems, look for exposed or loose wiring, testing and inspecting the capacitors and contacts as well.
We’ll calibrate your thermostat, monitor volts/amps on the fan motor and if necessary lubricate the bearings to keep it running correctly.
