J.R. Wortman can design and install lighting systems for all types of workplace environments, from office buildings and schools, to retail stores and malls, to manufacturing plants, warehouses and distribution centers.

If you have a business in Morristown, Indianapolis, Shelby County, the counties of Hamilton, Marion, Hancock, Rush, Johnson, Decatur or Bartholomew, or just about anywhere in Central Indiana, Wortman is here to help with your commercial or industrial lighting needs.

The Importance of Having the Right Lighting Conditions for Your Working Environment

Good lighting is important for performing a wide range of tasks; it creates a safer working environment and helps to prevent accidents. As you age, the amount of light entering the eye is reduced, causing a reduction in visual acuity, contrast and color intensity. The type of lighting and its intensity, color and direction all affect an individual’s visual performance.

Too much or too little light can be a problem in the workplace, but each person responds differently. Lighting needs also vary greatly depending on the type of business. A retail store needs vastly different lighting than a manufacturing plant or warehouse.

What Type of Lighting is Right for Your Business?

There are several kinds of lighting available, depending on the environment and situation, including:

  • Full spectrum lighting - the closest to natural sunlight and the most comfortable for people in office environments. Full spectrum bulbs are best when used in swing-arm lamps that can direct the lighting onto the task. The OH (high output) light is an example of this type of bulb.

  • Incandescent lighting provides a yellower, more direct light that is good for close work, such as assembly of small components. It is the most common form of light bulb, frequently used in desk or table lamps.

  • Halogen lighting produces the brightest and whitest light. For some people it can enhance contrast between print and background, but for others it generates too much glare. It also generates a lot of heat.

  • High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting is relatively cool burning compared to halogen, consumes much less power, and produces much more light at a much higher color temperature.

  • Fluorescent lighting disperses a blue-white light evenly and without shadows over a wide area. Because it generates a lot of light without using a lot of electricity, it is the type of lighting most often used in public places, such as supermarkets or offices. But it can create increased glare.

Positive Proof: Lighting Affects Performance

A study of five schools conducted in Canada by the Alberta Department of Education documented health benefits in children exposed to daylight (full spectrum light).

  • Students who attended daylit schools outperformed students who were attending non-daylit schools by 5%-14%, depending on whether short- or long-term impacts were assessed.

  • The largely daylit Durant Middle School in Raleigh, North Carolina, achieved the highest attendance rating of more than 100 schools in Wake County. In particular, daylight appears to have a measurable effect on performance.

The study conducted in Canada by the Alberta Department of Education documented health benefits in children exposed to daylight. The study compared the health of elementary school children in rooms with natural, full-spectrum light to those in rooms with conventional lighting. The conclusion? Far from being neutral with respect to affecting children, light has significant non-visual effects.

The Canadian study revealed that exposure to full-spectrum light resulted in students with better attendance (3.5 fewer days of absence per year) and more positive moods, resulting in better scholastic performance.

Relating these findings to the workplace indicates that proper lighting can improve employee performance, increase productivity and reduce lost time due to illness.

Commercial Lighting: T5 Lights - The Return of Fluorescents

Versatile T5HO (High Output) technology provides an energy saving alternative to traditional indoor high-bay lighting installations in both long-cycle and short-cycle (frequently switched) applications.

T5 systems can be operated by controls for instant on/off capabilities. With T5 technology, color rendering and color shift problems are not present and light output is significantly improved. In addition, lighting fixtures operate quietly and more efficiently while yielding up to 20 percent energy savings.

Instant start technology eliminates the need for heating the lamp filaments, which results in reduced energy consumption and lower operating costs. The result is approximately a savings of two watts per lamp. T5 instant start ballasts are specially designed to save the maximum amount of energy in long-cycle applications like gymnasiums, high-bay retail stores and warehouses, where lights remain on for long periods of time.

A 6-lamp T5 fixture with instant start ballasts can yield a 25 percent energy reduction compared to a 400-watt metal halide fixture, while increasing the light levels up to 20 percent.

Programmed rapid start technology allows the flexibility of using energy-saving lighting controls without sacrificing lamp life. Programmed rapid start ballasts are ideal for frequently switched applications like distribution centers and warehouses where occupancy sensors are used. The lightweight design and small cross section makes these ballasts ideal for conference rooms or indirect/direct linear applications.
