Why Use a Humidifier?

Understanding relative humidity is essential for the safety of your home. A home humidifier is a great appliance for comfortable living, but you need to know how to safely operate it. Other things to be aware of when considering a humidifier include:

• Air that is too dry can affect your family's health, damage your body and household items, and put a strain on your heating system.

• Air containing too much moisture is also a problem. Excess humidity supports mold and mildew growth, leading to potential respiratory and other illnesses. In climates where moist air is a problem, dehumidifiers have been introduced.

• During winter, when the heat is on, the relative humidity in your house can become very low. This is because heated air can hold more moisture than cold air.

• As the air in your home heats up, it becomes "thirsty" and begins sucking moisture out of surrounding surfaces: plants, walls, furniture, books, paintings, human bodies, everything! 

• Whenever air is heated, it dries out the air to uncomfortable and damaging levels.

What Humidity Level Should Your Home Have?

A relative humidity of 30-50% is the accepted norm for maximum comfort.  A digital monitor can be installed to check your humidity level. 

By keeping the humidity above 30%, you can normally turn down your thermostat a few degrees.   With a home humidifier to keep your humidity up, your heated air will feel warmer, creating a safer, more efficient environment.

Generally, any tricks and tips that apply to keeping heat in, will most likely improve the performance of a humidifier. The performance of your humidifier can be improved by:

• Sealing doors and windows, and fireplaces that are not in use helps retain your humidity and reduces humidifier workload
• Use tape or special window and door sealers to cover cracks and air leaks to make your home humidifier more efficient
• Do not keep your humidifier in a confined space, make sure it is not being restricted by it's surroundings to perform efficiently

Okay, But Why Do I Need a De-Humidifier As Well?

Dehumidifiers are vital for environmental control in areas where humidity can rise above 50% naturally. At humidity levels above 50%, increased water vapor present in the air can:

• Begin to allow furniture to warp
• Accelerate wood rot
• Harbor toxic mold and fungus (which cause odors and health problems)

A dehumidifier draws water in from the air and collects it into a holding tank or out through a hose connection.

Dehumidifiers have almost the same internal machinery as an air-conditioner. Where an air-conditioner cools on one side and releases heat on the other, a dehumidifier cools and then reheats the air.

• When the air is cooled inside the vents of dehumidifiers, the water held in the air condenses in the same way it condenses on a cold beverage on a hot day. The condensed water drips into the collection area and away from the air flow.

• After cooling, the air is then re-heated to room temperature using the same heat that was removed from it in the first phase.

The amount of water collection and speed at which water is removed varies among the different models, but specifications generally range from 20 pints (2.5 Gallons), up to 60 pints (8.75 Gallons) of water removal per day from the air.
