Traditionally, it has been considered that the cost to heat your home with natural gas is less expensive than with electric. While this still may be true, the rapidly rising cost of natural gas coupled with recent advances in heat pump and geothermal heating systems has narrowed the gap considerably.

Natural gas is still the most popular home-heating fuel in Indiana, heating 61 percent of its households, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. As the balance between available natural gas supply and demand has tightened, home-heating costs have risen significantly here and in other states.

Natural Gas Prices Are Rising for Indiana’s Homes and Factories

As illustrated in the chart below, the price paid by Indiana households rose more than 70 percent between 1999 and January 2005, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

A study released by The Alliance to Save Energy found:

• Over half of Indiana residents’ energy bill goes to heat their homes

• The average energy costs for Indiana homes heated with natural gas will increase by about $370

• Average energy bills for homes heated with heating oil or propane will go up about $195

• Electric-heating costs will rise by about $60.
