The Cost of Heating and Cooling Your Indiana Home: Dealing with Hot and Cold Weather

One of the most serious issues facing Indiana residents is the rising cost of heating bills. As natural gas prices rise, many Indiana families will have trouble paying their gas bills in the winter months. While the Governor has taken the admirable step of setting up the Help Thy Neighbor Program, this program will only provide temporary relief to families who will likely be facing the same problem next year when natural gas prices are expected to be even higher.

According to the Hoosier Environmental Council (HEC):

• Existing homes could reduce heating and air conditioning costs by up to 50% through sealing of air leaks, better insulation, and upgraded windows

• Installation of efficient heating and cooling systems such as geothermal systems and heat pumps could reduce heating and cooling costs by 30-60%

A study released by The Alliance to Save Energy found:

• Over half of Indiana residents’ energy bill goes to heat their homes

• Average energy bills for homes heated with heating oil or propane will go up about $195, while electric-heating costs will rise by about $60.
